So you’ve made the decision to start orthodontic treatment, where do you go now? Do you visit your dentist, or an orthodontist? Whilst most dentists can and will offer orthodontic treatment, does that make them your best option?
What’s the difference between a dentist and a specialist orthodontist?
An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has completed an additional three years of orthodontic study and training after working as a qualified dentist for at least two years. They focus on preventing, diagnosing and treating dental and facial irregularities to correctly straighten teeth, and align a patient’s bite and jaws.
Why will it make a difference to my treatment?
Whilst a general dentist can fit braces, they do not have the specialty training and experience in orthodontics. It is definitely worthwhile seeing a specialist orthodontist as they have the necessary qualifications and experience, and limit their practice to strictly orthodontic treatment (it is what they do all day, every day!). Although quick fixes and cheap claims might seem appealing, seeing a specialist orthodontist will give you the confidence and assurance you need in your orthodontic journey.
