Approaching cold and flu season amidst a global pandemic means it’s more important now than ever to take care of your health to support a strong immune system. As we discussed in How Your Oral Health Affects Your Overall Wellbeing, good oral health is your first step towards good overall health. So, what are some things you can do this winter to keep your mouth healthy, or help you recover faster if you become unwell?
BRUSH AND FLOSS DAILY
It may be hard to keep up with your oral hygiene habits when you’re not feeling well, but it’s so important. Remember to brush and floss twice a day to keep bacteria at bay.
TIP: If you have stomach flu and are regularly vomiting, it is probably your first instinct to brush your teeth immediately afterwards, however it is actually recommended to wait about 30 minutes before brushing to prevent coating your teeth with stomach acid. Instead, swish water around in your mouth or use a small amount of mouthwash.
DRINK PLENTY OF WATER
During the winter months, we often forget to drink water. Keeping hydrated will mean your body is better equipped to fight off infection. It is recommended to aim for at least 2 litres of water a day and try to avoid sugary or acidic drinks particularly if you have a sore throat.
REPLACE YOUR TOOTHBRUSH
Your toothbrush harbours all sorts of bacteria. Make sure to replace it at least every 3 months, and after you have been unwell to prevent re-infection.
GARGLE WITH SALTWATER
If you have a sore throat, avoid sugary medications and opt for sugar-free medication, or a simple saltwater gargle to help relieve symptoms. Gargling warm salt water can help loosen mucus and flush out oral debris or bacteria.
